Calendar is a collaborative project by textile craftsperson and artist Masaki Komoto and graphic designer Yuri Sato. Initiated in 2021, the project uses needlework samplers as a starting point to explore various ways of bringing needlecraft and graphic design together. They search for fresh approaches to needlecraft by introducing aesthetics usually associated with graphic design, whilst simultaneously respecting centuries old techniques used in sewing and embroidery. For their calendar series, each yearly calendar draws on different ideas and phenomena associated with graphic design and needlework. Such ideas subsequently influence both the format and printing methods used to realise each calendar.
Calendar シリーズは手芸家 / アーティスト 香本正樹とグラフィックデザイナー佐藤友莉が2021年に始動したプロジェクトです。グラフィックデザインの様式や考え方を刺繍に応用し刺繍表現の可能性を探求することを狙いとし、*サンプラーをデザインの基本コンセプトとしています。カレンダーは毎年異なるアイデアを元に製作され、それが各年の刺繍の違いのみならずフォーマットや印刷方法の差異にもつながります。
*サンプラー：刺繍などの針仕事の練習や記録として一枚の布の上に収められてきたもの。時代や場所により異なる内容、様式、トレンドなどが見られる。
